Shirley Bruno s films draw from her Haitian heritage preserving and radicalizing her ancestral traditions and mythology. She creates modern myths that expose the impermanence between the material and spiritual, documentary and fiction, between collective memory and history. She investigates the everyday, the Sacred, and the intimate violence in the things left unsaid and mark us generation after generation. Her films take their point of departure from neglected histories as well as from rumors, dreams, superstitious beliefs, memories both real and imagined. Her work has screened nationally and internationally at major festivals and contemporary art events. Her films are included in the permanent collections of Centre National des Arts Plastiques France, Leal Rios Foundation Lisbon and Vidéographe Montréal. Exhibitions of her works have been presented at the Montréal arts interculturels, La Galerie Municipale Vitry de Jean Collet, Villa Médici Rome, Palais de Tokyo, Maison Européenne de la Photographie, and the FRAC Dunkerque. Newly named Jerome Hill Artist Fellow (2019), Shirley is also the recipient of the Off-Limits Prize for An Excavation of Us at Annecy (2018) and an Honorary Mention for the Prix Ars Electronica Award in Animation (2018). Funding and support for her work includes Triangle-Astérides France, Jerome Foundation, National Greek Film Centre, NYSCA, NYFA, and the StudioPrix Collector Prize initiated by collectors Isabelle and John-Conrad Lemaître. Her films continue to screen internationally on TV5Monde and Shorts TV International. She is an alumna of La Cité International des Arts Residency as well as LIM Le Groupe Ouest Lab in development of her first feature film. Shirley holds a Masters with Distinction from London Film School and a Masters II with Mention from Le Fresnoy - Studio National des Arts Contemporains where she was an artist fellow. She lives and works alternately in New York, France, and Haiti.
