Mo Scarpelli

Mo Scarpelli is an Italian-American director and cinematographer of non-fiction cinema. Her films have screened at the Berlinale, Visions du Réel, IDFA, SXSW, Hot Docs, Durban IFF, BFI London Film Festival, Thessaloniki, at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, ICA London, and other festivals and venues. ANBESSA is her debut solo-directed film; it was nominated for both the Crystal Bear and Glashütte Documentary Prize at the 69° Berlinale, and broadcast on ARTE/ ZDF in France and Germany. Her recent film EL FATHER PLAYS HIMSELF, shot in Venezuela, received a Jury Special Mention for Best International Feature at the 51° Visions du Réel; it recently was awarded the Torino Film Lab Audience Design Fund, and will be distributed independently in 2021 as a result. Mo is a selection of Berlinale Talents, a recipient of the Speranza Female Filmmaker Award, and has received fellowships from the New America Foundation and the International Women in Media Foundation. She holds a Bachelor’s of Journalism from the University of Missouri (USA). She is based between New York and Rome.
