Behrens is an award-winning director and producer whose projects have screened at festivals across the globe including Mill Valley, Raindance, LadyFest, SF Women s Fest, Rome International, Santa Fe, Oaxaca, Phoenix Melbourne, Polish Film Fest, Boston International, Harlem International, San Francisco Film Society, DocFest and SF Green Fest. Her work engages issues that influence the human condition and the political landscapes that shape identity and power structures within marginalized communities. She recently completed work a feature documentary film that chronicles the forced demise of a community-recycling center in San Francisco due to gentrification efforts entitled Nail House. Behrens is the Director of the Documentary Film Institute (DocFilm) at San Francisco State University. She produces and directs a range of projects at the Institute including Abina And The Important Men (feature animated doc and history app), Con Moto: The Alexander String Quartet (semi-finalist Polish Film Festival) and Madame Mars: Women & The Quest for Worlds Beyond (in post-production) as well as the burgeoning web series, DocFilm Forum. Behrens produced the feature narrative Redemption Trail which premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival, garnered an Audience Award, and is distributed by Breaking Glass Pictures. Her short films include Climate Change (narrative) and My Garbage, My Neighborhood (documentary). She has appeared on CNN Dialogues in conversation about film, representation and social justice and presented work at the Tides | Thoreau Center series, Righting Wrongs: Celebrating Human Rights in Action. Behrens holds an MFA in Cinema, is Adjunct Faculty in the San Francisco State University s School of Cinema and President of Bay Area Women In Film & Media.
