Watch THE LIVES OF LAMOTT ATKINS on kweliTV

W.E.B. Du Bois famously wrote that every Black in America grow up with “this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others.” But what happens when the additional consciousness of being gay is added to that? This self-narrated documentary follows a man of extraordinary talent: running back from the Stanford Cardinal; dancer at Juilliard; model, singer, and performer in Europe; the epitome of black masculinity and grace. But he was in the closet for the first 40 years of his life. When he finally crashed and burned, his wanderings brought him to the very heart of gay life in San Francisco. And still he wouldn’t come out.
