When Sewa, a warm-hearted rebel, lands her first ‘real’ job with a prestigious NGO called Safe Haven Refuge for Women, she promptly announces that she is quitting the family business in Lagos and moving to the nation’s capital city of Abuja. With a bit of coaxing from her mother, she manages to convince her father to let her leave the nest, but soon discovers that her hard-earned freedom is not without its pitfalls. Discovering ABJ is a coming of age story that reflects the diversity of a new generation of Nigerians seeking to express and define themselves in a changing world. Through Sewa’s brave and at times comical journey, we experience the passion and idealism of youth, as well as the varied and complicated circumstances impacting contemporary women’s expressions of sexuality, personal agency, and physical autonomy.
