Lee’s Flower and Card Shop is the oldest continuously Black-owned flower business in Washington, D.C., standing as a pillar of the U Street corridor—once known as Black Broadway. Founded during an era when African Americans could establish businesses despite the constraints of Jim Crow laws, Lee’s has witnessed and withstood decades of change in the D.C. community. The shop has survived pivotal moments in U.S. history, from the unrest following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to the George Floyd protests in 2020. Through it all, Lee’s has served the nation’s capital with grace and dedication.
